Cyber Security Tips to Implement Today

1. Ensure Your Team Can Identify Phishing Emails

These are fraudulent emails hackers use to capture personal information or trick users into clicking on malicious links. Hackers pose as a trusted organisation or person, and use a sense of urgency so the recipient acts without thinking. This could result in cyber criminals gaining access to your network and sensitive data, with potential dangers including data theft or the installation of ransomware.

Over three billion phishing emails are sent daily, and if your team can identify these emails, they can avoid clicking on or engaging with them. Common signs of a phishing email include unexpected urgent requests asking for sensitive information, inconsistent branding with previous legitimate emails, suspicious links or attachments (do not click these – hover over links to preview the destination), poor spelling or grammar, and an email address that isn’t from a verified domain.

2. Create Secure Passwords

Passwords should always be unique and incorporate the following best practices:

• Use 12 or more characters including uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.
• Avoid personal information (e.g., your birthday or year of birth, the names of people close to you or your pets, or commonly used words such as ‘password’).
• Never use the same password for multiple accounts.

3. Turn On Multi-Factor Authentication

This adds another layer of security to your accounts and keeps cyber criminals out even if your information is involved in a data breach. It requires a secondary form of verification (alongside your password) which could take the form of a code, or use an authentication app or biometrics.

4. Install Updates

Ensure updates are regularly installed to strengthen your cyber defences. These updates are released to fix security vulnerabilities, and if these weaknesses aren’t resolved they can be targeted by hackers.
